Exciting Patreon Updates!

Exciting Patreon Updates!

It’s been a couple of years since AJ and I started our Patreon. We’ve had so much support since then and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has taken part.

This week we decided to revamp the Patreon and update our support tiers to give more back. The biggest update is the lowest tier—$2 per month—now has complete access to all the exclusive and advanced fiction and posts on the Patreon. Get bonus scenes, outtakes, WIP chapters, and more for half the price of a cup of coffee.

We’re also offering additional perks throughout the year so you never know when you’ll get a bonus. This week all Patreons at every support level got an advance copy of our new release, Loose Lips and Relationships, as well as a copy of the complete Free Men boxset.

We’ve got some exiting suff planned for the Patreon going forward, and we’d love you to be a part of our journey. Check it out—new Patreons get back access to all 100+ existing posts 🎉

New Release from AJ Rose #mmromance

I’m excited to announce a new release from AJ Rose, written with a little help from yours truly. Welcome to Flaming, Missouri.

loose lips flaming mo cover

Flaming is the perfect place for police officer Marc Warren to heal his battered heart after a broken marriage. The tourist town is an easy beat and he finds sanctuary in his beautiful cabin on the Lake of the Ozarks. So when Grant “Good Time” Taylor shows interest, Marc is in no hurry to let Flaming’s resident bad boy rock his boat.

Grant has no interest in dating locals. Tourists are plentiful and don’t want more than he’s willing to give. But a bar bet turns personal when Marc hands him a humiliating public rejection. If Grant wants to get under the mysterious officer’s skin, he’ll have to offer more than a temporary port.

The small town rumor mill gets a jumpstart as Marc and Grant realize what they’ve been missing all along—each other. But not everyone is happy for them. Someone will stop at nothing to sink the budding relationship. Can Marc and Grant overcome their fears to fight for each other, or is their happiness destined to drown?

Award winning authors AJ Rose and Kate Aaron have teamed up to welcome you to Flaming, MO, a cozy thriller series with feel-good themes, charismatic characters, and a small town with a big heart.

Available now from Amazon for $3.99 or included with Kindle Unlimited. Not in KU? Sign up now for a 30-day free trial.

Almighty Mountains and Happy Trees

Almighty Mountains and Happy Trees

For our third Bob Ross painting, AJ and I decided to do something dramatic, and nabbed a stack of black canvases. The picture we had in mind was Winter Moon.

Look at those almighty mountains and happy little trees! But what happened to the man who lived in the shed? Maybe he went fishing in the lake and drowned. Who know?!

I looooooove the blue in my sky. As the painting dries (it's going to take weeks to be completely dry) it just gets brighter.

This time AJ stuck to the script, but I love how we're painting the same picture and they're still so different. Check out these almighty mountains!

Kate and AJ’s Bob Ross Adventure Continues

Kate and AJ’s Bob Ross Adventure Continues

So we were two days before Christmas and just discovering the joys (and perils) of oil painting. AJ and I learn fast. We decided to watch The Grandeur of Summer, an hour-long Bob Ross special where he goes through every step of the painting for beginners like us. With hindsight, we probably should have watched that first. Oops.

Armed with a thinner coat of paint on our canvases and a couple of better brushes, we set to work on our second painting in two days: Golden Glow. Here's what we were aiming for:

This time we shouted less at Bob, and listened more. There were no mistakes, but maybe one or two happy accidents.

I'm pleased with this one. Watching the hour-long episode and figuring out some of the mistakes we'd made at the start made a massive difference. This time when we blended the paint or added new layers, it looked like it was supposed to.

Because AJ doesn't like yellow she did her own version, and renamed it Winter Glow.

Next time, we start with a black canvas. Don't miss it!

Kate and AJ’s Bob Ross Christmas

Kate and AJ’s Bob Ross Christmas

AJ and I were kidless this Christmas. Sometime between realising we can have sushi for dinner and the little pang that we weren't going to see the cherubs on the day, we looked at each other. "So, what are we going to do?"

Fortunately, I had an answer. I've been binging Bob Ross on Netflix and decided I wanted to paint. With oils. For the first time ever. Happily for me, my wife's the indulgent type.

Two days before Christmas we went to the local art supply store, and spent more than we intended on brushes, canvases, paint thinner, linseed oil, palette knives, and more. We didn't even wait the two days to break out the first canvas and try our first painting — Sunset Aglow. For the uninitiated, here's what it's supposed to look like.

Our attempts weren't perfect, and there was a lot of shouting at old Bob when he went zooming off and created something that looked effortlessly good, but for the most part we kept up.

We learnt pretty quickly about some of our mistakes. Less is definitely more when it comes to the first wash of paint on the canvas (hence my smeared sky). Also, thin paint sticks to thicker paint!

Here's AJ's attempt at the same picture. I covet her mountains.

Stay tuned because now we've been bitten by the Bob Ross bug, there are many more paintings in our future.

Don't forget the Blowing It series is still on sale. Check it out now!

The Patreon Dilemma

The Patreon Dilemma

There has been some controversy recently about authors signing up for Patreon. For those who don’t know, Patreon is a site where people can sign up to support creators (not just authors, but photographers and artists, musicians, models… you name it) by pledging them a fixed amount of money every month. Most Patreons start at $1 or $3, and can go all the way up to hundreds of dollars per month.

I’ll be honest, I’ve been considering it for a long time, but I hadn’t taken the plunge because getting a Patreon involves two things: 1. Talking about money, and 2. Swallowing my pride. Let me explain. Continue reading →

Hannibal Leaves Us Starving: Queerbaiting in Modern TV

Hannibal Leaves Us Starving: Queerbaiting in Modern TV

So AJ and I started watching Hannibal recently. We literally devoured S1 and S2, but halfway through S3, it started to jump the shark. The reasons we said that were various, and included the mashed up timeline and the whole mess that was the European jaunt, but what most got our goat was the queerbaiting surrounding the relationship between Hannibal and Will. At the time (three days ago) fans of the show told us it wasn’t queerbaiting and to wait until we’d finished it completely to form a conclusion. Yesterday, we finished it. This is our conclusion.

BE WARNED: herein lie spoilers for Hannibal and Black Sails Continue reading →
