Bumps In The Road

This is something of a confession. The last few months have been a bit of a mess for me. Visa stuff and family stuff and medical stuff, none of it very serious but all of it distracting, and my brain’s been turned to mush. I haven’t written much of anything since I finished Balls Up. I’ve got the sequel, Bottoms Up, all plotted out, but I’ve only got 15k written and it’s become increasingly clear in the past weeks that it isn’t right. There’s something missing and I can’t put my finger on what, but right now the book is sub-par. I’ve tried powering through but until I know what the problem is, I can’t fix it. So I’ve decided to pull up my big girl pants and made the difficult decision to shelve the book for the time being. (more…)

KDP Select and the Myth of “The Pot”

So we all know by now that Amazon is changing their payment scheme for Select borrows from a flat-rate payment triggered at 10% read, to a payment per page. They’ve delivered a laughable example of $0.10/page for this new system, which comes into effect next month. I think we all know it’s going to end up being something less than a cent per page when it actually happens, with the old payment of around $1.30 per read being the top-end of payouts for a full-length novel. Unmasking Piracy

So we all know as long as there have been digital files, there have been people stealing them. Generally I don’t lose sleep over my books surfacing on torrents or forum websites. I know in 90% of cases they’re using my title to hide a virus, and the people downloading them wouldn’t have paid money for my books anyway, etc etc. I know in the grand scheme of things, I’m not losing much in real terms from piracy. That doesn’t mean I have to like it, or condone it, and you can bet your ass when I find it, I report the shit out of it. I can write DMCA notices in my sleep. (more…)
